Herne Bay is a wealthy suburb of Auckland Central, New Zealand situated on the southwestern shore of Waitemata Harbour, west of Auckland Harbour Bridge.Â
It is renowned for its extensive harbour views, seaside villas and Edwardian era homes. Since 1850s, Herne Bay has been a prosperous place due to its outlook over Waitemata Harbour. Herne Bay was named as the most expensive suburb in New Zealand in 2015.
At the 2018 New Zealand census, Herne Bay had a population of 3,036 with 1,233 households.
Modern Landmarks
Herne Bay is notable for its modern landmarks, particularly the two apartment complexes known as the Herne Bay Towers. Established in the 1980s, the luxury Shangri-la Apartments and Westwater Apartments are the only high-rise residences in the suburb.

There are excellent schools in and around the suburb of Herne Bay. Ponsonby Primary School is located in Herne Bay and was founded in 1873. There’s also the Marist Catholic School, Richmond Road School, Bayfield School.
Local secondary schools include Auckland Girls Grammar School, Western Springs College, St Paul’s College and St Mary’s College.
