Royal Oak

Royal Oak is a small suburb in Auckland, New Zealand located between Epsom and Onehunga. The suburb is under the local governance of the Auckland Council. It takes its name from the Royal Oak Hotel, which was situated on the Royal Oak Roundabout.

According to the 2018 New Zealand census, Royal Oak had a population of 5,334 people and 1,881 households.

Royal Oak was once home to Boyd Zoo, one of New Zealand’s first zoological gardens, which opened in 1912. It housed 600 to 2000 specimens, including lions, tigers, wolves, flamingos, and other exotic animals.

The Boyd Zoo was popular with tourists, but the noise and odour made it unpopular with the locals. In 1922, the animals were transferred to the newly founded Auckland Zoo at Western Springs.

Local Schools

Royal Oak Intermediate is an intermediate school, and Royal Oak School is a contributing primary school. Marcellin College is a state-integrated Catholic secondary school.

Epsom Girls’ Grammar School, Auckland Grammar School, One Tree Hill College, St Peter’s College, and Onehunga High School are among the other nearby secondary schools in the suburb.
